Best Chaga Supplement UK: How to Choose Chaga Capsules and Extracts
The short answer
- Choosing the best chaga supplement in the UK starts with one botanical fact: chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is sold as the sclerotium, a hard, black, cracked growth on birch, not a fruiting body.
- For capsules and extracts, check the Latin name, "extract" or "raw powder", the ratio, the serving, the servings per pack and where it was harvested. A chaga label that says "fruiting body" is worth a question.
- Capsules require no brewing and provide a labeled number of capsules per serving.
- Ours: Chaga Capsules, 60 capsules of a 10:1 chaga extract, £19.99 for 30 servings (67p each), harvested in Finland and bottled in Sheffield.
About this guide: Mushroom Dispensary sells the chaga capsules discussed here. This is our own buying guide, not an independent review. Here is what we would check on any chaga capsule or extract, and how ours compares, including what our label doesn't tell you.
Chaga has a long history as a folk tea in Russia, Finland and the Baltic countries, and it is sold in the UK as chunks, raw powder, capsules and liquid extracts. This guide is about buying chaga as a supplement: capsules and extracts. If you want to brew chaga tea from chunks, our chaga guide covers tea and preparation.
Chaga is not a typical mushroom
Many mushroom supplements are made from a fruiting body, the part of the fungus you would recognize as a mushroom. Chaga is different. The black lump you see on a birch trunk is a sterile conk, or sclerotium: a dense mass of fungal tissue mixed with wood, with a cracked, charcoal-like crust outside and a rust-brown to golden, corky interior. It grows slowly on living birch trees in cold northern forests.
Chaga does produce a fruiting body, but only rarely, as a thin crust that forms under the bark after the host tree has died. It isn't what chaga products are made from. So, unlike lion's mane or reishi, "100% fruiting body" is not a sign of quality on a chaga label. It is a botanical oddity, and worth asking the seller about.

Raw chaga powder vs chaga extract
This is where chaga supplements differ most, and where price comparisons go wrong. Raw chaga powder is the sclerotium, dried and milled. Because chaga is so hard and woody, much of that powder is tough, insoluble material.
An extract has been made by processing the chaga to draw out and concentrate what dissolves, then drying the result into a powder (or keeping it as a liquid). A gram of extract and a gram of raw powder are not the same thing, so a big milligram number on a raw powder is not comparable with a smaller number on an extract. When you compare two chaga products, first check they are the same kind, then compare serving and price.
What to check on any chaga supplement
- The Latin name. Inonotus obliquus. "Chaga blend" or "chaga complex" without it isn't enough.
- Sclerotium, or something else. Chaga products are normally made from the sclerotium. Some are made from mycelium grown on grain instead, which can include the grain in the final powder; if the label says "mycelium" or "myceliated", ask what proportion is substrate.
- Extract or raw powder. An extract should say so, ideally with a ratio. A 10:1 ratio means roughly ten parts of dried chaga went into one part of extract. Our mushroom extract explainer covers what ratios and "equivalent" figures mean.
- Serving and servings per pack. How many capsules or ml per serving, and how many servings in the pack.
- Other ingredients. Chaga mixed with other mushrooms, herbs or vitamins is a different product. Look for the other ingredients on the label.
- Where it was harvested. Chaga grows on birch across northern Europe, Russia and North America. A good seller tells you where theirs comes from and where the product is finished.
- Claims on the pack. Only authorized health claims may be used for foods. Promised results are a red flag.
Chaga label terms, decoded
| Term on the label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sclerotium or conk | The black growth on birch that chaga products are normally made from |
| Extract | Processed to concentrate what dissolves; should be stated, ideally with a ratio |
| Ratio, for example 10:1 | Roughly how much dried chaga went into one part of extract |
| "Equivalent to" a large mg figure | A calculation from the ratio, not the amount in the capsule |
| Ground, milled or raw | The dried chaga powdered, not extracted |
| Mycelium, myceliated or full spectrum | Grown from fungal culture, often on grain; ask what proportion is grain |
| Fruiting body | Unusual for chaga; ask the seller to explain |
Capsules or a liquid extract?
| Extract capsules | Liquid extract | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Chaga extract in a capsule shell | Chaga extract in a liquid with a dropper |
| How you take it | Swallow with water; no brewing | Drops under the tongue or in a drink |
| What to check | Extract and ratio, capsules per serving, servings per jar, shell material | ml per serving, base liquid, servings per bottle |
| We sell | Chaga Capsules, £19.99 | No |
Where chaga comes from
Because chaga grows slowly on living trees, where and how it is harvested matters. It is reasonable to ask any seller where their chaga was harvested and whether they can tell you more about how. Ours is harvested in Finland, and our capsules are bottled in Sheffield and dispatched from Barnsley by Royal Mail. You can read how we work on our story page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best form of chaga to take?
The one that suits you. Chunks are brewed as a traditional tea (see our chaga guide); raw powder is mostly woody material; an extract in capsules requires no brewing and comes in a labeled serving. Compare what is in a serving, not the claims on the pack.
What is the best chaga supplement in the UK?
We don't claim that any one product is universally best, ours included. Look for Inonotus obliquus named, the sclerotium or other source stated, an extract with a clear serving, the other ingredients listed, a harvest location and a fair price per serving from a company you can contact.
What should I not mix with chaga?
If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are under medical care, speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking chaga or any other food supplement, and tell them what else you take. Don't exceed the serving on the label.
Is chaga a mushroom?
It is a fungus, but the part that is harvested isn't a mushroom in the everyday sense. It is a sclerotium, a dense mass of fungal tissue that grows on birch, with no cap, stem or gills.
How long does a jar of chaga capsules last?
Our jar holds 60 capsules. At two a day that is 30 servings, about a month.
