How to Take Lion's Mane: Capsules or Tincture
There is no secret technique to taking lion's mane. Nobody needs a ritual, a moon phase or a special spoon. The honest answer is dull but useful: pick the format you will actually stick with, take the serving on the label, and take it at roughly the same time each day.
That said, "pick a format" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. We sell lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) as capsules and a tincture, and the two are not interchangeable. The serving is different, the taste is different, and the way you take it is different. This guide walks through both so you can choose with your eyes open.
The short answer
- Capsules: two a day with water. No taste, fixed serving, the simplest option.
- Tincture: 1ml under the tongue for around 30 seconds, or stirred into a drink.
Most people take lion's mane in the morning, and that is what our product pages suggest. But consistency matters more than the exact time on the clock. A morning habit you keep beats a perfectly timed one you forget by Thursday.
Two ways to take lion's mane
1. Capsules
Our Lion's Mane Capsules are the plainest way in. Each two-capsule serving contains 1,000mg of 10:1 lion's mane extract, the equivalent of 10,000mg of raw mushroom. The extract is made from 100% fruiting bodies (never mycelium grown on grain), dual extracted with hot water and ethanol, and filled into plant-based HPMC capsules with no gelatin, grain, starch or filler. There are 60 capsules in a recyclable amber glass bottle, which is 30 servings, or about a month.
You can take both capsules together or split them across the day. Swallow with water. That's it.
Good for: people who want to know exactly how much they are taking, and people who would rather not taste anything.
2. Tincture
The Lion's Mane Tincture is a 30ml bottle of dual-extracted lion's mane, again from 100% fruiting bodies, with a glass pipette. The recommended serving is 1ml, so a bottle gives you 30 servings.
There are two ways to take it. Put 1ml under your tongue and hold it for around 30 seconds before swallowing, or stir it into a drink. Coffee, tea, juice and smoothies all work, and anything with its own flavor covers the earthy taste well. A tincture also makes it easier to adjust your own serving within the label guidance than a capsule does.
Good for: people who don't like swallowing capsules, and people who already have a morning drink to hide it in.
You will also see lion's mane sold elsewhere as instant coffee, cacao and gummies. We don't sell those formats. If you buy one, check the label for the milligrams of extract per serving, the same as you would for a capsule.

When to take lion's mane
Our product pages suggest the morning, and that is when most people take it. The practical reason is simple: mornings already have a routine attached. You make a drink, you eat something, you leave the house. Attaching lion's mane to something you already do is far easier than inventing a new moment in the day for it.
If mornings are chaos in your house, take it whenever you reliably remember. We cover timing across the whole range in when to take mushroom supplements.
How much should you take?
The serving on the label. Don't exceed the recommended daily intake, and don't treat several lion's mane formats as a buffet. If you take the tincture in the morning and capsules at lunch, you are taking two full servings of extract, not one. Pick one format as your daily serving and use the others as swaps, not extras.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care, speak to your GP or pharmacist before you start.
What to check on any lion's mane label
Whoever you buy from, the label should answer four questions without making you squint:
- Is it the fruiting body or mycelium? The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium grown on grain means part of what you are paying for is grain.
- How many milligrams of actual extract are in a serving? Not the "equivalent" number. The real one. We explain the difference in what a mushroom extract actually is.
- What is the extraction method? Dual extraction with hot water and alcohol should be stated plainly if it has been done.
- Is there a batch Certificate of Analysis? Ours are linked from our product pages.
Mixing formats and Buy 2 Get 1 Free
Some people end up with two formats: capsules for workdays and a tincture that lives in a bag. Our Buy 2 Get 1 Free offer is permanent and works across the range, so formats can be mixed. Add any three qualifying products to your cart and the lowest-priced one is free. For example, two bottles of capsules (£19.99 each) and a tincture (£19.99) come to £59.97, and one of the three comes off, so you pay £39.98. It applies to one-time purchases, not subscriptions, and it can't be combined with other discount codes. The whole lion's mane range is in the lion's mane collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to take lion's mane?
Capsules, if you are happy swallowing them: two a day with water, no taste, no measuring. If you have a coffee every morning anyway, 1ml of the tincture stirred into it is arguably even easier because it rides on something you already do.
Can I put lion's mane tincture in coffee?
Yes. Stir 1ml into the finished cup. Coffee's own flavor covers the tincture well. Tea, juice and smoothies work too.
How long does a bottle of lion's mane capsules last?
A bottle holds 60 capsules. At two a day that is 30 servings, so about a month.
Are the capsules vegan?
Yes. They are plant-based HPMC capsules with no gelatin, and the fill is lion's mane extract with no grain, starch or filler.
