Mushroom Blends vs Single Species: Why We'd Rather You Build Your Own Three

Walk down any supplement aisle, or scroll any wellness shop, and you'll find mushroom blends everywhere. Six-mushroom capsules. Ten-mushroom powders. A "complex" with a dozen Latin names in the small print. It feels like good value: why buy one mushroom when you can have ten in the same capsule?

Because a capsule is only so big. This guide explains the arithmetic of mushroom blends, when a blend genuinely makes sense, why we built our range around single species, and how to put together your own three for the price of two.

The arithmetic of a mushroom blend

A typical mushroom capsule holds around 500mg of powder; ours are 500mg each. Two capsules, a typical serving, hold about 1,000mg. That is the space you have to work with, whatever the label says on the front.

Now split that 1,000mg between ten mushrooms. If it is shared evenly, each one gets about 100mg. If it isn't shared evenly, and there is no rule saying it has to be, one or two mushrooms might take up most of the space while the rest are there for the ingredient list.

Compare that with a single-species capsule. Our Lion's Mane Capsules, for example, put 1,000mg of 10:1 lion's mane extract into each two-capsule serving. All of that space goes to one mushroom.

None of this makes blends dishonest. It just means "more mushrooms" and "more mushroom" are not the same thing, and it is worth knowing which one you are paying for.

What to check on a blend label

  • Is the amount of each mushroom listed? Some blends give a total for the whole mix but not how much of each mushroom is in it. If you can't see the individual amounts, you can't compare it with anything.
  • Extract or ground mushroom? Blends often mix both. An extract and a ground powder at the same weight are not the same thing.
  • Fruiting body or mycelium? And if mycelium, whether it was grown on grain that is still in the powder.
  • Ratios. A blend might contain extracts at several different ratios, which makes a single "equivalent" figure hard to interpret. We explain ratios properly in what a mushroom extract actually is.

Why single species

We sell our whole range as single-mushroom products for three practical reasons.

You know exactly what is in each bottle

Each single-mushroom capsule states one species, one extract dose and one ratio. There is nothing to divide up and nothing hidden behind a total.

You can change one thing at a time

If you take a blend and decide you'd rather drop one mushroom, you have to drop all of them. With single species, you keep what you like, swap what you don't, and change formats whenever you want: capsules for one, a tincture for another.

Different mushrooms have different traditions

Reishi is traditionally taken in the evening. Cordyceps is traditionally taken earlier in the day. Lion's mane is usually taken in the morning. A single blended capsule has to pick one moment for all of them. Separate bottles let each one sit where it traditionally belongs.

When a blend makes sense

Blends have a real advantage: one bottle, one habit, one thing to remember. If simplicity matters more to you than control, that is a perfectly reasonable choice.

If you want a fully declared extract dose for one mushroom, the single-species range is where to look.

How to build your own three

Here is where single species gets interesting. Our Buy 2 Get 1 Free offer is permanent: add any three qualifying products and the lowest-priced one is free. You can mix and match across the whole range, species and formats included. So instead of one blend, you can build your own three, each at a full single-mushroom serving.

A few example combinations:

Keeping your three in step

One small, practical point that makes a three-bottle routine easier to live with: most of our range runs on the same clock. Every single-mushroom capsule bottle holds 60 capsules, which is 30 servings at two a day. The lion's mane and turkey tail tinctures are 30ml at 1ml a serving, so also 30 servings.

That means three of them, started on the same day, run out at roughly the same time, and you reorder all three together, which is exactly when Buy 2 Get 1 Free kicks in again. The one to watch is the Reishi Tincture: its serving is 2ml, so a 30ml bottle gives 15 servings rather than 30. If it is part of your three, plan on a second bottle within the month.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mushroom blend better than a single mushroom?

Neither is better in general. A blend is simpler: one bottle for several mushrooms. A single-species product gives you a full, clearly stated serving of one mushroom and lets you change things independently. The key is reading how much of each mushroom a blend actually contains.

Can I mix formats in Buy 2 Get 1 Free?

Yes. Capsules and tinctures can be mixed. Add any three qualifying products and the lowest-priced one is free.

Which one is free?

The lowest-priced qualifying item in your cart. With three items at the same price, one of them comes off.

Do subscriptions count toward Buy 2 Get 1 Free?

No. The offer applies to one-time purchases only. Subscriptions have their own saving: 10% off on a monthly plan.

Can I use a discount code as well?

No. Buy 2 Get 1 Free can't be combined with other discount codes. It is applied automatically, so you don't need a code for it.
