Best Lion's Mane Supplement UK: How to Choose One

The short answer

  • The best lion's mane supplement in the UK for you is one whose label names Hericium erinaceus, says whether it is made from the fruiting body or from mycelium, states the extract and ratio, gives a clear serving and lists what else is in it.
  • Compare price per serving, not price per pot. Pack sizes, servings and strengths vary between brands.
  • Capsules suit people who would rather not taste anything; a tincture suits people who would rather not swallow capsules or want to add it to a drink.
  • Ours: Lion's Mane Capsules (60 capsules, 10:1 fruiting body extract) and Lion's Mane Tincture (30ml, fruiting body), £19.99 each, 67p a serving, harvested in Finland and bottled in Sheffield.

About this guide: Mushroom Dispensary sells the two lion's mane products discussed here. This is our own buying guide, not an independent review. The seven checks below apply to every brand, and we score our own products against them at the end, gaps included.

Lion's mane supplements are sold in many forms: capsules, tablets, gummies, tinctures, powders, and blends with ginseng or vitamins, often with very different numbers on the front of the pack. That makes like-for-like comparison hard, and it is why "best lion's mane" roundups often disagree.

Why "best lion's mane" lists disagree

Roundup methodologies vary, so check the product label, serving count and price per serving yourself. UK food law only allows authorized health claims on foods, so we don't claim that our lion's mane does more for your health than any other, and we don't make health claims for it at all.

What you can compare is how the product is made, how much is in a serving and what each serving costs. That is what the seven checks are for.

The 7 checks before you buy lion's mane

1. The Latin name: Hericium erinaceus

Lion's mane is Hericium erinaceus, the white, shaggy mushroom with long hanging spines instead of a cap and gills. It grows on dead or damaged hardwood such as beech and oak. In Britain it is rare in the wild and legally protected, so leave any you find in the woods alone. A label should give the Latin name; "lion's mane complex" on its own is not enough.

2. One species, or a blend?

Some products sold as "lion's mane" also contain ginseng, omega-3, B vitamins, caffeine or other mushrooms. That makes them a different product, not a stronger one, and it makes like-for-like comparison impossible. If you want lion's mane, look for a label where lion's mane is the only mushroom and the other ingredients are listed. We explain why we built our range around single species in mushroom blends vs single species.

3. Fruiting body or mycelium?

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself, the spiny white mass you would cook. Mycelium is the root-like network it grows from. Some lion's mane products are made from mycelium grown on grain, with the grain dried and milled in, which is legal but means part of what you are buying is grain. Labels that use only the fruiting body usually say so; if a label says "mycelium", "myceliated" or "full spectrum", ask the seller what proportion is substrate. Ours is made from the fruiting body.

4. Extract, and the ratio

A raw powder is dried lion's mane, milled. An extract has been processed to concentrate it, and the label often gives a ratio. A 10:1 extract means roughly ten parts of dried mushroom went into one part of extract. Ratios are only comparable between products that state them the same way, and an "equivalent" figure (for example "10,000mg equivalent") is a calculation from the ratio, not an amount in the capsule. Our mushroom extract explainer walks through this. Our capsules use a 10:1 extract.

5. Serving size and servings per pack

Check how many capsules or milliliters make one serving and how many servings the pack holds. "60 capsules" can be 60 servings, 30 servings or 20 servings depending on the brand. Ours: two capsules per serving and 30 servings per jar, or 1ml per serving and 30 servings per tincture bottle.

6. What else is in it

For capsules, check the shell (ours is HPMC) and whether anything else is in the fill. For tinctures, check the base liquid if you avoid alcohol; if it isn't on the label, ask the seller before you buy. Our Lion's Mane Tincture is alcohol-based. Tablets are pressed powder, so they usually need binding agents to hold their shape. We sell capsules and a tincture, not tablets.

7. Price per serving, and who stands behind it

Divide the price by the number of servings. Then check there is a real company with a UK contact, a returns policy and a clear answer to "where is this made?". Ours: harvested in Finland, bottled in Sheffield, dispatched from Barnsley by Royal Mail, with 14-day returns on unopened items. Read our story for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Which brand of lion's mane supplement is the best?

We don't claim that any one product is universally best, ours included. A product worth considering is one whose label passes the seven checks: Hericium erinaceus named, fruiting body or mycelium stated, an extract with a clear serving, the other ingredients listed, and a fair price per serving from a company you can contact.

Which form of lion's mane is best: capsules, tincture or powder?

It depends on how you want to take it, not on an effectiveness comparison, which we do not make for these products. Capsules are swallowed whole and give a fixed serving; a tincture is measured with a pipette and can go into a drink; powder has to be measured and mixed. Compare what is in a serving, whichever you choose.

What should I avoid while taking lion's mane?

Don't exceed the serving on the label, and don't stack several lion's mane products without adding up what you are taking. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care, speak to your GP or pharmacist before use.

When should I take lion's mane?

Follow the serving instructions on the label. The serving can be taken at a time that is convenient for you.

How long does a jar of lion's mane capsules last?

Our jar holds 60 capsules. At two a day that is 30 servings, about a month. The 30ml tincture is also 30 servings at 1ml a day.

Is lion's mane the same as the mushroom you cook?

Yes, the same species. Fresh lion's mane is a well-regarded cooking mushroom; see our lion's mane recipes. Our supplements are extracts, which are different from eating the fresh mushroom.

Can I buy lion's mane and reishi together?

Yes; they are sold as separate products and both count toward Buy 2, get 1 free. If you are considering taking more than one supplement, follow each label and ask your GP or pharmacist where the standard cautions apply. We compare the two mushrooms in lion's mane vs reishi.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care, speak to your GP or pharmacist before use.
